Not every item on the grocery shelf is eligible for purchase with EBT benefits; in some cases, you can buy what you need, depending on the label. That might sound not very clear, and it is for many shoppers. So, can you buy vitamins with EBT<\/strong>?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Can You Buy Vitamins with EBT Card?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose you rely on SNAP benefits and use an EBT card to purchase food. In that case, you might wonder whether you can buy vitamins or supplements with those benefits. While the goal of SNAP is to support better nutrition, the program places specific restrictions on what qualifies as an eligible food item, and unfortunately, most vitamins and supplements are off the list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the USDA\u2019s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), vitamins<\/strong>, <\/strong>medicines<\/strong>, <\/strong>and<\/strong> <\/strong>dietary<\/strong> <\/strong>supplements<\/strong> <\/strong>are<\/strong> <\/strong>not<\/strong> <\/strong>eligible<\/strong> <\/strong>for<\/strong> <\/strong>purchase<\/strong> <\/strong>with<\/strong> SNAP <\/strong>benefits<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, any product labeled with a \u201cSupplement Facts\u201d<\/strong> panel is classified as a supplement and is therefore not eligible for purchase using SNAP or EBT.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This includes most vitamins and multivitamins, protein powders<\/a> (even those mixed into drinks), meal replacement shakes marketed as supplements, and energy drinks with a supplement label.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if a product looks like food (e.g., a shake), if it’s labeled and sold as a supplement, SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there\u2019s an exception. Food and drink items that display a \u201cNutrition Facts\u201d<\/strong> label are generally eligible for purchase with EBT. That means certain energy drinks and protein shakes may qualify, but only if labeled as food rather than supplements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
