Yes, using international roaming services does incur costs. You can pay for international roaming in two primary ways: by purchasing a fixed-price Roaming Pass (Add-on Bundle) or by using service at standard Pay As You Go (PAYG) rates.
What's the difference between a Roaming Pass and Pay As You Go (PAYG)?
A Roaming Pass is a bundle you purchase upfront for a fixed price, giving you specific allowances (data, talk, text) for a set duration in supported countries. It offers predictable costs and better value for planned usage. Pay As You Go (PAYG) means you pay for each minute of talk, text, and MB of data individually as you use them, at standard rates. PAYG is best suited for unplanned, very minimal, or emergency usage where you only expect to use a few minutes, texts, or KB/MB of data.
What happens when I use up the voice, data, or SMS allowance in my roaming package or roaming credit?
Once you have used up the allowances included in your roaming package or your existing roaming credit, service for those specific allowances will stop. You will not incur any additional charges. To continue using international roaming, simply access your account portal and purchase another International Roaming add-on or add more international credit.
Can I receive text messages and calls from the US if I travel abroad without purchasing a roaming package?
No, generally you cannot receive calls or text messages while roaming if you do not have an active roaming pass or sufficient PAYG roaming credit. Your AirTalk account needs to have international roaming capability enabled, which is typically included with a roaming package or requires a minimum PAYG balance. How do I enable international roaming on my phone before traveling?
Ensure that you have an active Roaming Pass or sufficient PAYG balance. Once confirmed, you typically need to enable "Data Roaming" in your phone's settings.
- For iPhones, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming (toggle On).
- For Android phones, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming (toggle On).
What should I do if my phone is not connecting to a network or roaming is not working?
First, try restarting your phone. Ensure that "Data Roaming" is enabled in your phone's settings. Check that you have an active Roaming Pass or sufficient PAYG balance. If you still have issues, try manually selecting a different network operator from the list of available networks in your phone's mobile network settings.
